Disability and mental health groups called on the House Energy and Commerce Committee today to revise the Medicaid reentry provision included in the next COVID relief bill. The provision would ensure that Medicaid funds are used to provide critical services like case management, peer support, and other covered services provided by community-based service providers to engage inmates, facilitate transition back to the community, and link them with community-based services and housing. Without this change, this new funding could be used simply to reimburse for basic services currently provided to incarcerated individuals by correctional staff rather than critical services to help incarcerated individuals transition to the community.
