President Biden has fought for the rights of Americans with disabilities over the course of his career. As a senator he voted to advance the Americans with Disabilities Act. He also voted in favor of some of the legislation which has been crucial to the work done by the Protection and Advocacy System, including the Help America Vote Act – a law that afforded millions of Americans better tools to participate in the political process. As Vice President, he worked to pass the Affordable Care Act, which made it illegal to deny people access to health insurance based on their disability status.
Over the last three and half years, as president, Joe Biden has worked to strengthen the protections for people with disabilities in healthcare settings under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. He has advanced the rights of millions of Americans under the Americans with Disabilities Act, fighting to bring the cornerstone disability rights law into the 21st century by extending its protections to online access. And he has fought to secure more funding for the home and community-based services that keep countless people with disabilities in their communities and out of institutions.
As someone with a lifelong stutter, Joe Biden is the first president to openly be a person with a disability. We know he will not be the last. And we look forward to working with him on behalf of our community over the next six months.
